I love painting flowers and I have a special affection for Irises. This iris print is hand embellished with gold colored foil and gold paint. After painting a small, single columbine, I wanted to paint a group of them. The different circular chambers of the flower are echoed in the gold rings of the composition making it both complex, and compact. I incorporated torn paper into the leafy, green background to layer in texture. Pieces of cut, circular papers both yellow and patterned, are added to the flowers as stamen and pollen. I love how all the elements work together to create a cohesive image. This print is hand embellished with gold paint. The metallics are reflective and add a glittery element to the image. This collection of irises was a way for me to incorporate more of the leaves rather than just the flowers. I like the spear shaped leaves and think they contrast nicely with the complexity of the iris. I was also able to include buds and the various stages of blooming. In my series of iris paintings, I wanted to try one with a more delicate and varied color palate. This pink iris picked up a lot of the surrounding colors allowing me to be more expansive with my color. It was a lot of fun to experiment! The green portion of the background contains elements of torn handmade paper to layer in textures. This print includes hand embellished elements of gold paint. I was thinking about shipwrecks and classic, cameo style portraits and embarked on this painting. She was crossing the Atlantic and her ship sank in a storm. A traumatic death made her into a sea wraith. Her portrait ages with the addition of coral, mussels, barnacles, and more as her mind is thoroughly destroyed.

I’ve drawn a few jellyfish dancers, but this ballerina is special. The jellyfish part was inspired by a sea nettle. It’s one of my favorite jellyfish. I leaned in to the clear, shiny jelly aspects to get dynamic colors and depth. I’m really happy with how this one came out. She’s beautiful!

The original inspiration for this merman was a whale shark. I think that specificity got a little lost as I worked on it, but I think that peaceful strength of a whale shark comes through. I think it could go a few different ways, but he’s very much a male version of another mermaid I’ve painted. Go ahead and get yourself a print! It’s a lovely distraction for your walls.
